In life, we ought to take every opportunity as a stepping stone. Being aggressive as I have come to realize is the best way to achieve your dreams. When in school nobody prepares you for the tough world out there. A person of strong will and courageous is one of the important recipes that an individual should possess
About six months ago, I had completed my diploma and my internship contract had ended. I was surfing the internet desperately looking for a job. I applied to every vacant position that matched my skills and then I had an idea to look for volunteer opportunities that could keep me busy before I landed myself a real job. That was how I came to learn about International Transformation Foundation which at the moment was looking for a volunteer videographer. I received a call to attend an interview and from that moment on, my life took another turn. I film all their community based projects and what makes the job even more interesting is seeing how lives get transformed through all their activities.
I got lucky to be selected to take part in a project dubbed Read Project where we were to do research on the state of literacy level in our country and then go do a presentation of the same in Palermo, Italy. I have to admit that travelling outside the country has been one of biggest dreams and getting this chance for me was simply a miracle. At the moment I did not even have a passport, but by God’s grace I applied for one and even facing the risk of being eliminated from the selected team, I got it in good time. The journey was not easy at all because acquiring the visa was pretty challenging. We got the visa and everything fell into place. On the 17th of March 2017 we travelled to Italy with so much enthusiasm and joy.
We met people from other nationalities as well and right there I knew it was going to be a very interesting week and a life changing one at that. Eager to indulge ourselves with the Italian culture especially their food, we had our appetites quite expectant. Activities kicked off on the 19th where we did ice breaking activities to familiarize ourselves with each other. Throughout the week we had activities that revolve around art which was basically our main theme for the project. Working in groups taught me a lot of things and helped me discover new things about myself too. To make our stay there more interesting, we had a magician from India who showed us a few tricks to keep us entertained. It was a training course meant to prepare us for how we were going to implement the activities in our country. Apart from the serious stuff, we got to tour around Palermo and learnt so many things about the Italian people. One thing I really enjoyed about Italy was the pizza and makes sense since you cannot go where pizza originated from and not get a taste of it.
At the end we benefited so much from the trip because not only did we get the training but we also got new friends from Slovenia, Austria, India and Italy. We built connections and shared ideas and as a matter of fact having friends from different walks of life is not bad at all. I will live to remember the hospitality, the respect and more so the bread because every meal there had to have bread.
